UFCW Local 371 is part of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. The International Union represents over 1.4 million working men and women throughout the United States and Canada. The Members of the UFCW come from all backgrounds and walks of life. The UFCW represents members in a wide range of Industries, including health care, meatpacking, poultry and food processing, manufacturing, distillery, winery, textile and chemical trades, and retail food.

The UFCW is America's Neighborhood Union-members standing together to improve the lives and livelihoods of workers, families, and communities. Whether it's making the blue jeans your children wear to school, stocking and scanning the groceries you buy, or processing the turkey you carve on Thanksgiving Day, UFCW members are proud to serve you.

Local 371 has been in existence since May 13, 1940 and has approximately 12,000 members working in various industries and with various employers in Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and Vermont.

The UFCW Local 371 is about workers helping workers achieve better wages, better benefits, and safer working conditions. Despite the challenges of soaring health care premiums, costly prescription medications, retirement insecurity, and economic instability, Local 371 is a powerful voice for working men and women, leading efforts to protect and improve the livelihoods of all workers.

To all Local 371 Members employed by Shaw's Supermarkets

Dear Brothers and Sisters-

Negotiations between Shaw's and Local 371 ended tonight, Friday, March 7, 2008 at 6:00 PM.

Both sides are still far apart on a number of very important issues. Local 371 and the Company have agreed to have a Federal Mediator sit in on the negotiations in hopes that an agreement can be reached before the contract expires at midnight on Saturday, March 8, 2008.

If a tentative agreement is not reached by 10:00 AM on Sunday, March 9, 2008, a strike vote will be taken.

At this crucial time it is important that you support your Union Leadership, so we can obtain a new contract agreement we can all be proud of.

Thousands of people from across the state will be there. Inspirational speakers, "share your story" video stations, a parent-comfort station, and radio and TV coverage will make this day historic for the state. Power Station 104.1 and WPRX 1190 AM will join us. You will be part of history in the making!

Congratulations to New England Stop & Shop Workers!

With the help of supporters in the community and in other UFCW Local Unions throughout the East Coast, Stop & Shop workers achieved a solid victory yesterday when they ratified a three-year contract agreement securing affordable, quality health care for all Stop & Shop employees.

Stop & Shop workers held firm in their resolve to improve health care accessibility, quality and cost for part-timers and full-timers, through their contract expiration and more than a month of tough negotiations. And their solidarity and strength paid off. The new contract cuts new hires' waiting period for health care in half, and requires no monthly contribution to premiums from part-timers, who make up 80 percent of the New England Stop & Shop workforce.

The contract also secures good wage increases and retirement security for all Stop & Shop workers.

This is a huge victory for Stop & Shop workers, and for UFCW grocery workers all over the nation who are either in negotiations or soon will be. If Stop & Shop (owned by Dutch company Royal Ahold) can offer quality, affordable health care to all of its employees, so can other national and international grocery chains.

Unity bargaining--coordinated efforts with community members and other UFCW members regionally and nationally--was key to Stop & Shop workers securing a great contract. As the Grocery Workers United campaign gathers momentum, gaining more members and supporters, we should start to see these coordinated efforts pay off in negotiations throughout the country and in Canada.
